Apple App Store icon: 1024×1024 and the no-alpha rule

Every iOS app submission needs at least one 1024×1024 PNG icon for the App Store listing. This is the marketing icon users see in search results, the App Store, and the Today tab — it must be opaque (no transparency), 72 DPI minimum, sRGB color space, and follow Apple's icon design guidelines.

The 1024×1024 spec

App Store icons must be exactly 1024×1024 pixels, square, with no transparency or alpha channel. The file format is PNG (preferred) or JPEG, with a maximum of 20 MB on the high-res version (the in-app assets use derived sizes like 180×180, 120×120, 87×87, etc.).

Do not pre-apply rounded corners

Apple applies its own corner radius (the "squircle") to your icon. If you design with rounded corners baked in, your icon will show a smaller circle inside the rounded square. Design with a full bleed square and let iOS apply the rounding.

iOS app icon sizes

iOS uses derived sizes from the 1024×1024 master:

iOS automatically downsamples the 1024×1024 to these sizes — you only need to upload one icon.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my icon get rejected? The most common rejection reason is including transparency or an alpha channel. Apple's review system will reject any icon with non-opaque pixels.

Can I use a flat single-color icon? Yes — Apple's HIG encourages simple, recognizable icons. The key is contrast at small sizes (60×60 notification icon).

What about dark mode and tinted variants? iOS 18+ supports dark-mode and tinted variants, but the master 1024×1024 is still required as the primary.
